How to Use UNESCO Heritage Tracker
UNESCO Heritage Tracker lets you explore all 1,000+ UNESCO World Heritage Sites, track which ones you've visited, and share your journey with others. Here's everything you need to know.
Browsing Sites
The All Sites page lists every UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can search by name or country using the search bar, and filter results by:
- Category — Cultural, Natural, or Mixed
- Region — the UNESCO regional grouping (e.g. Europe & North America, Asia & Pacific)
- Country — the country or countries where the site is located
Click any column header to sort the list. Use the page size selector to show 10, 25, 50, or 100 results at a time.
Interactive Map
The Map view plots every site with known coordinates on an interactive OpenStreetMap. Click any marker to see the site name, category, and a link to its detail page. Use your mouse or trackpad to zoom and pan.
Site Detail Pages
Clicking a site opens its detail page, which includes:
- Category, region, and inscription year
- Countries and coordinates
- A short description from UNESCO
- Links to the site's Wikipedia article and any additional URLs that have been added
- An embedded OpenStreetMap for sites with coordinates
- A count of how many users have visited, visited virtually, or want to visit
- Related sites from the same region
Creating an Account
An account is free and unlocks visit tracking and URL suggestions. Click Register in the top-right corner, enter your email and a password, and you're ready to go. You can set a display name on your profile page at any time.
Tracking Your Visits
On any site's detail page, use the three tracking buttons to record your status:
In Person
You've physically visited this site. Optionally add a visit date and personal notes.
Virtual
You've explored the site online — through a virtual tour, documentary, or research.
Want to Visit
Add this site to your bucket list so you can keep track of where you'd like to go.
Click a button again to remove that status. Each type is independent — you can mark a site as both "In Person" and "Virtual" if you've done both.
For In Person and Virtual visits, expand the Notes section to add a date and personal notes (up to 4,000 characters). Notes are private and only visible to you.
Your Profile & Visit History
The My Visits page (in the navbar when you're logged in) shows a summary of all your tracked sites, broken down by visit type. You can filter and search your own list, and see your total counts at a glance.
Your profile also includes a public profile option. When enabled, you get a shareable link that lets anyone see your visit history without needing an account. You can copy or regenerate this link at any time from the My Visits page, and share it directly to Facebook, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, or Pinterest using the share buttons provided.
Badges
Earn badges as you rack up In-Person and Virtual visits. Both count toward the same total — so a site you've both visited in person and explored virtually still counts as one. When you cross a milestone, a popup appears on screen to mark the moment.
View all your earned and locked badges — along with how far you are from the next one — on the Badges page (visible in the navbar when logged in). Earned badges also appear on your public profile so others can see your milestones.
Suggesting URLs
On any site's detail page, logged-in users can suggest an additional URL to attach to that site — for example, an official tourism board page or a dedicated heritage foundation website. Submitted URLs are reviewed by an admin before they appear publicly on the site.
All submitted URLs are checked against Google Safe Browsing before they are accepted, so only legitimate links make it through.
Tips
- The site list and map both work without an account — no sign-in required to explore.
- Visit counts shown on site pages are community-wide totals, not just yours.
- Dark mode is available via the moon icon in the top-right corner of the navbar.
- Transboundary sites (spanning multiple countries) are listed under all of their countries in filters.
- Badges are based on unique sites visited — marking a site both In Person and Virtually still counts as one visit toward your total.
