This site is built almost entirely on other people’s work — open data, open-source libraries, and freely licensed fonts. This page credits all of it and records the licence each piece is used under.

Heritage data

Information about World Heritage Sites — names, descriptions, categories, inscription years, criteria, coordinates, and danger-listing status — comes from the World Heritage List dataset published on UNESCO’s open data portal (dataset whc001), and is used with attribution to UNESCO. Translations of site names and descriptions are UNESCO’s own, taken from the same dataset.

Our copy is a periodic snapshot and will drift from the official record between imports. The authoritative source is always the UNESCO World Heritage List. We are not affiliated with UNESCO, and UNESCO does not endorse this site or vouch for how we present its data.

Images

Thumbnail images on site pages are hosted by Wikimedia and are linked from the corresponding Wikipedia article, which is also linked on the page. Wikimedia images are individually licensed — most under a Creative Commons licence or in the public domain — and the authoritative credit for each one is on its Wikimedia Commons file page, reachable through the linked article. If you are the rights holder of an image and want it credited differently or removed, tell us on the Copyright & Takedown page and we will act quickly.

Country flags are served by flagcdn.com.

Maps

Map tiles and the embedded map on site detail pages come from OpenStreetMap. Map data is © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL), with the rendered tiles available under CC BY-SA 2.0.
